If your computer has a CD creation device (CD-ROM burner), simply storing all of documents you create in the same area (like the My Documents folder) makes it possible to back up most everything you'll need by regularly copying the contents of this area to a CD. It requires discipline to always save files in this area or in subfolders below it, but the cost of blank CD's is so low this method is simple and inexpensive.

Many people prefer the safer method of using a Tape Backup system. There are many varieties available, including external units that may be shared among several computers.

For the more thorough method of backing up to tape, using tapes in rotation stored in off-site location guards against data loss.
